Art on water

This is one of those things that most tourists never get to see, because they don’t even know it exists, but it’s also one of the most interesting arts you can watch: painting on water (or Ebru as Turks call it).

There’s this hidden corner, just after Hagia Sophia, where you can find a Medresesi. A madrassa is the place where Koran is taught and students learn about Islam. Nowadays it’s not working as a madrassa anymore but as an art school. There are workshops or ceramics, calligraphy and ebru.

Caferaga Medresesi was built buy Minar Sinan, the most famous Ottoman architect and in a small house close to it, resides an incredible artist which creates the most beautiful paintings by splashing ink on water.

I took some pictures and you can just see for yourself. Seems that he’s actually worldwide famous and there are several videos on YouTube about him. His name is Coşkun Uzunkaya.
